Frock It!

I get great feedback on my Frock It posts – so glad you all enjoy them – and as I haven’t done one for a couple of weeks, thought, I’d better pull my finger out and get one done before I go off on my hols.

So, what’s been happening in the world of celebrity fashion recently?

First up, we have Geri Halliwell attending some charity event, but looking as though she’s auditioning for Big Fat Gypsy Weddings.  Not her best look ever.

Another lady in white recently was Beyonce …

Now I actually really like this dress from the thighs downwards, but the top two thirds somehow look like a sack to me.  I’ll let her off, though, bearing in mind it’s possibly deliberately cut to disguise her pregnancy.

Next, Christina Hendricks of Mad Men …

I didn’t want so much to comment on her dress sense as to sympathise with her poor feet – that must be the most ill-fitting pair of shoes ever!

The Duke & Duchess of Cambridge were out and about a couple of weeks ago, and Kate wore this beige dress …

I don’t really want to say it, but is it just me or is anybody else finding Kate’s outfits just a little bit samey and boring?  Sorry, Kate.

Moving on, poor old Demi Moore’s been having a bit of a time of it lately.  Ah well, it was bound to happen, wasn’t it?

Once again, this is not actually about her outfit, but this time to comment on HOW THIN THIS WOMAN IS!!  Seriously, she looks as if she’d snap if you bent her in half!

Back to the fashion, and I thought Kirsten Dunst looked fabulously elegant in this white dress …

Accessorised with a blingy clutch and a narrow belt with a gold clasp – nine out of ten.  Would have been ten if she’d done something a bit more chic with her hair.

Kim Kardashian was out and about in New York, showing us all how NOT to do smart casual …

… and Liz Hurley showed us how to do it properly …

I am not a fan of the skinny jean – so few people actually look nice in them – but Liz is absolutely rocking them here.

I don’t normally like SJP’s style, but I did like this outfit she wore recently …

I’m liking her more since I enjoyed her performance in I Don’t Know How She Does It so much.

And I’ll leave you this week with this question – who wore it best when Pippa Middleton and Geri Halliwell both turned up to the same event in very similar red dresses?

My money’s on Geri.

Frock It

Another week, another selection of celebrity fashion highs and lows.

There were a couple of lovely evening dresses on red carpets this week, firstly Kelly Osborne in this gorgeous black number.

I’m not a fan of Kelly’s at all, but I thought she looked better than I’ve ever seen her in this dress.  Weird grey hair thing going on though – what’s that all about?

The other evening dress which caught my eye this week was one worn by supermodel Heidi Klum.

I absolutely love this dress – it’s one of my favourites of all those I’ve ever written about in Frock It – if only I’d look 1% as good as Heidi does in it!

It was nice to see Taylor Swift, after last week’s granny get-up, wearing something more suited to somebody of her age – I thought she looked lovely in this sparkly number:

A great improvement.

Hasn’t Mel C glammed up immensely in recent years?  She’s come a long way since her Sporty Spice days.

Shame about the hideous tattoo on her leg, though – it rather takes away from the overall effect, if you ask me.

Renee Zellweger looked lovely this week, too.

Chic and understated – lovely.

Dannii Minogue’s outfit at The Ivy earlier this week has me firmly on the fence – I can’t decide whether I like the whole look or not.

Yay or Nay?  I definitely don’t think the brown shoes go with the rest of her ensemble, anyway.

Moving on to this week’s ‘you really should know better’ brigade, London Fashion Week brought out a host of frocky horrors.   Two of my least favourites were Jessie J, who clearly got dressed in the dark, and Nicola from Girls Aloud, who has ‘trying too hard’ written all over her.

Britney Spears wore a HIDEOUS dress this week:

You’d think she’d have enough money to afford a stylist, really, wouldn’t you?

And finally, it disappoints me to say, is Fearne Cotton, launching her new fashion collection with Very.co.uk.

I love Fearne, and regularly listen to her morning show on Radio 1, but what was she thinking with this dress?  Yet another frock that looks like a nightie.  Horrible colour on her, too – and the lippy doesn’t go well, either, while I’m at it.  I do like the 20s thing going on with her hair, though.

So, what do you think of this week’s fashion selection?

Frock It: The “Please Dress Suitably For Your Age” Edition

Another week, another bunch of outfits, and a recurring theme I’ve found this week is celebs wearing outfits intended for people born in a differerent decade …

First we have the ubiquitous Mrs Beckham, wearing a “dress” (and I use the term loosely, bearing in mind it looks more like a nightie to me) from her own latest collection.

It strikes me as a more suitable frock for a four year old attending a birthday party, but even then it does look rather like a shapeless sack.  And as for those hideous clodhopping boots with it – horrible, horrible, horrible.

Next on my hit list is Taylor Swift, the American singer, who is 22 years old.

Such a pretty girl, normally, but why on earth is she wearing this ensemble which would be more suited to an aging grandmother?  Weird.

And here is possibly the most precocious (though eminently cute) child in the world, Suri Cruise:

Never spotted in the same outfit twice, Miss Cruise has a wardrobe that most women would be jealous of – and she’s only five!  She’s already got accessorising down to a fine art, clearly!

And just for the sake of balance, here’s somebody who I thought got dressing for their age just perfect: Coronation Street actress Helen Worth:

I thought she looked classic and elegant at the TV Choice Awards earlier this week – particularly next to some of the younger soap stars and the most of the cast of The Only Way Is Essex!

Moving away from the age thing now, my very favourite outfit of the week was Tess Daly looking absolutely gorgeous in this yellow number:

Not an easy colour to carry off successfully, but Tess is absolutely rocking it.

Honourable mention also to Holly Willoughby (who I don’t much like), but I thought this dress was fab:

And my frocky horror this week was Jessie Wallace of Eastenders, snapped on a recent holiday:

Back next week with more of the same – hope you’ll join me!

Frock It!

Gosh, all those celebs have been busy while I’ve been away – I could have written several posts today on some of the fashion hits and misses I’ve been flicking through in the last week or so!

So, brace yourselves for a rather long post today ….

First up, two very different celebs stepped out wearing Victoria Beckham designs recently:

Kim Kardashian looked pretty fabulous, I thought, (particularly compared with some of the trashy outfits she wears) in this dress.

No so much Kate Winslet, however, who appeared rather uncomfortable – the neckline looks all wrong, and I don’t think the sludgey colour does much for her.  Top marks, Kate, though, for those fabulous blingy Jimmy Choos:

Madonna has been out and about rather a lot recently. (She must be promoting something but I’m afraid I have no idea what.)

I thought this unusual butterfly dress was gorgeous, though you need to lose the Dame Edna sunnies, Madge.

I can’t help but to find it somewhat disturbing, though, that somebody who looked like this in 1994 …

… looks almost identical in 2011 …

It’s just weird.

Moving on, I thought Daisy Lowe looked lovely in this elegant black lace dress.

Dr Who could really do with changing his hairdresser, though.

Still on the subject of black lace, Sarah Jessica Parker has been out and about promoting her new movie, I Don’t Know How She Does It.

As ever, she has worn a plethora of designer and couture outfits, but this particular dress was one of my favourites.

And leave it to a footballer’s wife to show us how NOT to do the black lace thing:

Shame on you, Abigail Clancy (or are you known as Abigail Crouch these days?)  Yuck.

It pains me to say it, because I do love Kylie Minogue, but I don’t know what’s gone wrong here:

That dress is a bit muttony, poppet, if I’m honest, and also looks like it was purchased from a market stall.  Sorry.

Nicole Scherzinger showed us all how not to wear our belts this week:

Another yuck from me.

And finally, a little ‘who wore it best’ for you:

Princess Beatrice and Leighton Meester both wearing a really pretty grey Elie Saab dress.  My money is on Leighton, as I think Beatrice went a little over the top with sparkly shoes, and clearly hasn’t learned that less is sometimes more.

Oh, I do enjoy Frock It!  See you all next week with more.

Frock It – Hits & Misses

So, who’s been wearing what, and how well, this week?

Let’s start with the hits:

Helen Mirren looking absolutely fabulous at the premiere of her new movie The Debt.  Hair, lippy and dress all get my vote, but I think she could have chosen better shoes.

Katie Holmes, looking great for the second week in a row.  Love the simplicity of the white dress and fab (Lanvin) shoes as well.

Vanessa Hudgens, proving that even a pair of boots and an oversized sweater can look great when worn the right way – I’d love to be able to get away with an outfit like this, but fear I’d look like a mad bag lady!

Onto the ‘hmm, not sure about that …’ category:

The first picture I saw of Zoe Saldana in this dress was this back view, and I thought it looked really elegant.

Then, unfortunately, I saw a photo of the front of it …

Shame.

Moving swiftly on, Kelly Brook was a bridesmaid at her friend’s wedding last weekend, and looked her usual glamorous self:

But, bridesmaids in black mini dresses?  Doesn’t sit well with me. What do you think?

Real horrors this past week have included the following:

Sorry, Kate, this outfit you chose for visiting riot victims in Birmingham didn’t get my vote at all.  I know it’s McQueen and I know it’s ticking all the fashion boxes with the military styling, but I just.  don’t.  like.  it.

Kerry Katona entering the Big Brother house.  This frock goes firmly into the ‘whatever were you thinking’ box.

And finally (mostly because I’m running out of time  and have to take William to karate, not due to lack of horrible outfits!), this electric blue nylon-looking number, worn by Sally Bercow (wife of the Speaker of the House of Commons), also entering the Celebrity Big Brother house.

I could write a whole blog post about this vile woman, but with the time constraints I’m currently under, suffice to say that the dress she selected perfectly reflects her as a person: cheap, trashy and classless.

Frock It!

Time for my weekly celebrity fashion review again, and I was horrified to read that Jordan/Katie Price has turned her hand to fashion design *shudder*.  The results are pretty much as one would expect – here are a couple of highlights:

Interesting pairing of tracksuit and high heels.

Moving swiftly on ….

This is the first time I’ve featured the lovely Kylie on Frock It, and I normally don’t have a bad word to say about her style.  But this outfit did leave me pondering …

Much as I love a bit of leopard print, I’m really not sure that two different leopard prints in one outfit (bag and dress) are my cup of tea.  Think I’d have gone for a black bag with that dress, personally.  Love the dress itself, though.

I haven’t seen Katie Holmes looking really good for a while, so it was nice to see her pulling off a simple LBD last week really well.

Simple, classy and elegant – and I really like the nude shoes with it, too (sorry, Glynis, beige!!)

I’ve been a fan of Freida Pinto since seeing Slumdog Millionaire (and saw her earlier this week in the new Planet of the Apes movie).  She usually looks absolutely fabulous, so I was a bit disappointed when she chose this Victoria Beckham dress for a US TV chat show appearance recently:

I didn’t think either the colour or the cut suited her, and she looks really uncomfortable in it, too.

This week I’ve saved the best until last, and I thought Christina Ricci’s dress was gorgeous:

She was filming the new TV series ‘Pan Am’ in New York, which is set in the 60s.  Can’t wait for it to be shown over here.

That’s it for this week, but I’ll be frocking it again same time, same place next week.

Frock It – The Copycat Edition

There hasn’t been an awful lot of exciting celeb fashion for me to comment on over the last week – I think they must all be away on holiday!

So this week I thought I’d talk about a new range of dresses by Debenhams in tribute to some of the styles worn at the Royal Wedding.

Firstly, they’ve designed a wedding dress based on Pippa Middleton’s bridesmaid dress.

Hmm, it’s not rocking my boat – particularly not when compared to the original.  The neckline is a bit odd, I think, and it could do with some sort of embellishment to add some interest.

Next up, an evening dress allegedly matching Ms Middleton’s evening attire at the wedding.

Now, if we ignore that the Debenhams knock-off is a completely different colour from the original, I actually quite like it as an evening dress.

Finally, they’ve made a short black version of Kate’s wedding dress.  Yes, really – look:

I don’t like it.  At first I wasn’t sure, but now I am – it looks dated and dowdy – and in my opinion, all that lace and long sleeves does not work with a cocktail length frock.

No doubt, however, all three will fly off the shelves, given the current media obsession with the Middleton girls.

And before I go this week, I just had to mention Natalie Cassidy (aka Sonia from Eastenders) who made her debut on Loose Women last week wearing this.

Oh dear.

Frock It!

Truly, my cup runneth over this week – ANOTHER Royal Wedding to get my teeth into – fabulous!

So without further ado, let’s look at The Dress:

Firstly, I should say that I thought Zara looked absolutely radiant, and I particularly loved that she wore the same tiara her mother, Princess Anne, wore on her (first) wedding day.  I’m afraid I didn’t go a bundle on the frock, though – I just thought it was a bit meh, and I really didn’t like the shape or the wide net shoulder straps.

The Royals were out in force, naturally, some looking better than others, it must be said!

Dear oh dear, Princess Eugenie: after a couple of improved outfits recently – remember the red dress at Elton’s ball, and the other red dress at Ascot? – I thought perhaps her dress sense had improved.  Not so, however – I really don’t think this ensemble does anything other than accentuate the less favourable parts of her anatomy.

Her sister, on the other hand, looked stunning:

I thought Princess Beatrice looked very elegant, loved the colour, and thought it was a perfect choice of outfit for a smart summer wedding.

Onto the Duchess of Cambridge in a gold brocade coat, which she first wore to a wedding back in 2006, albeit with different accessories.  This is probably my least favourite of Kate’s outfits so far this year – I think it’s a bit old for her, and the fabric seemed very heavy for July.

Autumn Philips, the bride’s sister-in-law, looked boring and frumpy, and more as if she was attending a job interview than a wedding.  I had a suit a bit like that for work back in the mid-90s.

The Countess of Wessex wore a very stylish suit and matching hat, all of which I like – I think the different textures of the individual items compensate for the lack of colour really well.

(Phew, glad I could be nice about Sophie, bearing in mind I’m related to her!)

Mothers of the bride and groom – what CAN I say?  I really didn’t like Princess Anne’s outfit AT ALL – the length was wrong, the pleaty fabric looks cheap, and the jacket looks as though it doesn’t fit properly.  And as for the brown lace and Eighties headgear sported by Mrs Tindall – wrong, wrong, wrong.

Sorry, ladies.

Camilla was looking quite smart, and seems to be emulating the Queen’s style of late (no bad thing, I suppose), but I’m not sure what that thing on her head was? Somewhere between a hat and a fascinator, but I’m guessing the look she was going for was not that of somebody having plonked a hydrangea bush on her head.  Which was what she achieved.

But my favourite outfit of the whole day was worn not by a Royal, but by a soapstar, bizarrely – Katharine Kelly from Coronation Street stole the show as far as I was concerned in this beautiful, understated ensemble.

I thought she looked lovely.

And just one more thought to leave you with – what is WITH the Royals and their nude shoes?  Are they getting a bulk discount??!

Frock It!

There haven’t been many outfits which have caught my eye of late – perhaps all the celebs are away on holiday with it being the summer season!

One dress that I did really like was this one worn by Blake Lively recently.

I think the colour really suits her, and it’s an unusual but very feminine style – I particularly like the embellished hem and neckline detail.

I was quite sad to read that Jennifer Lopez has split up with her husband – such a shame, particularly as they have young children.  So I guess she can be forgiven for not thinking too hard about what she’s wearing at the moment.

I’m usually quite a fan of Jennifer’s style, but I thought these two dresses were horrible – particularly the green one, which looks as though the right sleeve and neck piece was added as an afterthought.

In other news, I see Geri Halliwell has collaborated with high street chain Next, to design a range of eveningwear.

Geri is obviously channelling her inner Farrah Fawcett with those hair extensions – think you might be a bit old to be rocking that look, Geri love.

As for the dresses themselves, I have to say I’m a little disappointed: my overall emotion is BOREDOM.  Why are they all made out of the same fabric – that cheap-looking  satin is not a forgiving fabric at the best of times?  And the designs themselves – well, they’re just a bit bleugh, ordinary, unexciting, don’t you think?

I don’t think VB needs to worry that another ex-Spice is about to steal her fashion designing crown any time soon ….

Linking up with lovely Mid-30s-Life, who started the whole Frock It thing – why not do a Frock It post of your own and link up, too as she’s feeling a little bit unloved this week?

Frock It: A Week of Weddings

It’s that time of year when weddings seem to be ten a penny, so I thought I’d pull apart take a look at some wedding dresses this week.

First of all, there was a footballer marrying a bimbo model (yeah, really, such a surprise – not).    He’s already cheated on her at least once, but she forgave him, had his baby and now they’re married.  I give it about 8 seconds before he does the same again.  And she’ll no doubt forgive him.  Again.  Cynical, me?

Anyway, to more important matters – the dress:  don’t much like it, Abby – sorry.  I do think it’s such a shame when brides don’t wear any sort of head dress or veil – apart from the fact she’s clutching a bouquet, she could be at any ‘do’, really, couldn’t she?

Refreshingly, Peter and Abby didn’t have a magazine deal for their wedding pics, which I thought was nice.

Now, another model who got married this week was Kate Moss, now Mrs Hince.

Designed by the currently disgraced John Galliano, Kate’s dress was very ‘her’.  I love her veil and I like the dress from the waist down (Kate, nipples on show through your wedding dress is simply NOT classy).  Also love the bridesmaids outfits.  And the newly-married couple looked very happy.

Also this week – my cup runneth over – we had another royal wedding to enjoy – along with the persistent rumours that the bride had tried to flee the country only days before her nuptials and had her passport confiscated by the police to stop her doing so.  There’s never a dull moment with the Grimaldi family, is there?

And here is the newly wed Princess Charlene (I snigger every time I write or say that), looking gorgeous – if not radiantly happy – in her wedding gown designed by Giorgio Armani.

Lovely.  Really pretty bouquet as well.

Now, moving on a bit from weddings, I have been very interested in seeing what the lovely Kate has been wearing on the Royal tour of Canada this week.  I do like her: I’m a big royalist anyway, but she really has been a (much needed) breath of fresh air for the Royal Family, and she and William are obviously so happy together.

Here are some of my highlights – outfit wise – from the last few days:

And that’s it from me, Frock It-wise, for a few weeks, as I’m off on my hols tomorrow for a fortnight.  Pop over to Mid-30s Life for more fabulous frocks.
