I Hope You Dance

Now, I hope you’ll indulge me this once: I’m not, as a rule, overly slushy or sentimental, but I guess a bit of time alone and some introspection can do that to a person …

I’ve been thinking so much about Will on his camping trip since he went away yesterday morning.  I can’t speak to him because they weren’t allowed to take mobile phones with them, so I have no idea how he’s enjoying his trip – I would love to be a fly on the wall!  I’m sure they’re all having a fantastic time.

And it got me to thinking how quickly our children grow up and set out on their own path, and wondering what William’s life will bring him, and where his path will take him.  And then I heard this song on the radio by Leeann Womack, and the words seemed to be a perfect expression of what every parent wishes for, for their child as they grow up ….

I Hope You Dance

I hope you never lose your sense of wonder
You get your fill to eat, but always keep that hunger
May you never take one single breath for granted
God forbid love ever leave you empty handed
I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean
Whenever one door closes, I hope one more opens
Promise me that you’ll give faith a fighting chance
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance –
I hope you dance….I hope you dance.

I hope you never fear those mountains in the distance
Never settle for the path of least resistance
Living might mean taking chances, but they’re worth taking
Loving might be a mistake but it’s worth making.
Don’t let some hellbent heart leave you bitter
When you come close to selling out, reconsider
Give the heavens above more than just a passing glance
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance –
I hope you dance….I hope you dance.

  1. Just lovely! We have so many hopes for our offspring but don’t forget, regardless of age, we’re also someone’s child… we should heed those words and dance too!

    • Thanks for commenting, Rach – I had no idea you read my blog! You’re right, though, we should all be dancing at every opportunity! x
