1. Fair Game
Interesting political thriller based on a true story. Enjoyed it.
2. The Iron Lady
Meryl Streep stole the show with an amazingly realistic portrayal of Margaret Thatcher. Jim Broadbent was brilliant, too. As for the film itself, not my favourite, felt a bit like a made-for-TV movie.
3. Due Date
Below average American comedy road trip movie. Yawn.
4. London Boulevard
Had high hopes for this British film with a great cast. Unfortunately it was indeed as bad as the reviews said it was, and I switched it off after half an hour. Horrendous amount of totally gratuitous bad language – and that was the least of its problems.
Don’t know how this film has passed me by for so many years, but on a dull Saturday afternoon in January, this bit of light-hearted fun with a great soundtrack was just what the doctor ordered.
6. Shutter Island
Like this dark, twisty thriller (horror?) but wanted to like it more than I did, if you know what I mean. Was a bit overlong in parts, I thought. A bit Sixth Sense – ish.
7. Valentine’s Day
Really enjoyed this ensemble cast film – lots of different threads and very entertaining. Great.
This thriller starts well, when a man awakens from a coma only to discover that someone has taken on his identity and that no one (not even his wife) believes him. Unfortunately, whilst watchable, it just felt it’s like something that’s been done before, and didn’t really keep me gripped at all.
9. Oranges & Sunshine
Based on a true story, this film is set in 1980s Nottingham, where social worker Margaret Humphreys holds the British government accountable for child migration schemes and tries to reunite the children involved — now adults living mostly in Australia — with their parents in Britain. Very watchable, and taught me about something I didn’t know as well.
Went to see this last night. Disappointing. The first hour felt like a children’s film. And I didn’t cry at all. One needs to suspend belief about so many things in order to give this film the gravitas it seems to think it deserves, I felt the viewer was being taken for a ride (‘scuse the bad pun).
What have you watched recently? Anything good?
PS This is my 1,000th post – can’t believe how long I’ve stuck at writing this blog!!
